Planning the Perfect Wellness Weekend

Wouldn’t it be nice to live in a yurt on a beautiful beach for a month or so? Yes, maybe, but that’s probably not real life for most of us. What could be possible though is some intentional time spent at home, or close to it, focusing on the wellness of ourselves and our families.

Break out your calendar and start planning for your wellness, now! Try one of the ideas below or create your own…

Plan A Mini Trip

“Mini” is the keyword here. Do you have a friend or family member nearby who would love to host you? Do you live within an hour or two of an affordable hotel with a pool? Plan a short 24-36 hour mini-trip, complete with a small bag, car snacks, and little to no itinerary.

This idea is ALL about ease! Give yourself a relaxed amount of time to leave and return in, make sure to come back early enough for a good night’s rest too. If you love to “get out of town” this sort of trip can be just enough peace and quiet (or excitement) to refresh the soul.

Stay-Cation

Tell everyone you are headed out of the country and then lock the door and stay home. Just kidding…kind of! The idea behind a “stay-cation” is to enjoy the comforts of home without the pressure to leave it. Stay-cations work best when the house is relatively clean and picked up.

THINK: Prepare for company coming, but YOU are the honored guest!

Order takeout, have comfy pajamas at the ready and make sure everyone in your house knows that stay-cation is for enjoyment – not remodeling the guest room.

A stay-cation can also be a great time to enjoy the things you don’t normally take time for, like treating yourself to a facial or reading a long book.

Food Prep Party

We all love a tasty home-cooked meal but during the week, after a long day of responsibilities, cooking can be a tall order, and snacks, cereal, or sad sandwiches sound better and better by the minute. Give yourself a hand during the week, with some intentional food prep this weekend.

Food prep could be a team event with a friend or quality solo time. This could be a time to prep some freezer meals, or to do simple prep for the week ahead. Tasks such as chopping fruits and vegetables, boiling eggs, cooking grains, or roasting meats can often be done on the weekend and then enjoyed throughout the following week.

You will thank yourself on Thursday!

Technology Detox

Too much tech can leave us anxious, irritable, unfocused, and even sad. With time spent working, socializing, and entertaining ourselves on phones, computers, and televisions, we can quickly lose touch with how we are actually feeling in our bodies, minds, and spirits.

To free up some valuable brain space, commit to a weekend, as tech-free as possible. Swap social media and screen time for hobbies such as gardening, walking, painting, or re-decorating a space. Plan a meal out with friends or a family game night, play music, or spend time reading, making art, or volunteering for a cause that is special to you.

Health Retreat

Feeling blah? Spend a weekend getting physical and focusing on your health by making movement, rest, nourishment, and pampering your body your priority.

Take a long walk on Friday evening and make supper. Start Saturday with a Yoga class and a smoothie, take an afternoon nap, clear a space in your house for exercise or meditation, or try cooking a plant-based dinner. Spend some time exercising your brain with a puzzle or meditation too!

Clutter Clear-Out

While the work of decluttering might not be appealing, the end result sure is! The trick to NOT making this one feel like a weekend at work involves a timer and mixing in lots of treats and rewards. Identify a few – seriously, 3 max – areas you might want to de-clutter. For example, the hall closet, bedroom, and bathroom cabinet.

Grab 4 boxes and label them “Trash, Recycle, Donate, or Re-Home/Keep.” As you work, put things back in their “homes” or rehome them.

No homes? Donate them! Have items you believe no one will want? Then to the trash or recycling it goes. Set a timer for 30-50 minute increments for planned breaks! Have a seat, drink hot chocolate, watch a 20-minute comedy, have a meal, then attack the next project.

End the weekend with something you love to do and feel proud of yourself for improving your environment.

Home Spa Weekend

Enjoy the comfort and convenience of spa treatments at home. At-home pedicures, manicures, facials, and hair masks are all simple beauty treatments that can be done at home and can leave us feeling brand new.

Make sure your favorite robe and slippers are ready for you to slip into, gather your pampering supplies, find a relaxing playlist, and silence the phone. This can be a solo or family affair! Even kids can get in on the fun, or if they are too little or uninterested, consider hiring a babysitter or swap babysitting with a friend or neighbor on alternate days, to give both yourself and a friend some quality quiet time.

So, which weekend wellness adventure will you try?
